Last night, Italy has bagged their forth world cup in a fashionable style. The Italian's ever reliable defence has stopped the lights of Thiery Henry and co to lift the coverted World Cup trophy in penalties. A big standing obation to Fabio Cannavaro, Italy's captain. He was the rock behind the solid defence! He was a true class act.Cannavaro together with his compatriot, Andrea Pirlo carried the team to victory.
The game intensity was high as the first half saw a goal from each side, complementary of Zinedine Zidane's brilliant penalty in the 7min and a header from Marco Materazzi in the 19min to even up the score.
As the clocked ticked towards full time, neither side has lost their concentration. The French threw every poosible form of attack they could at the Italians. The Italians proved hard to beat with Cannavaro marshalling a 4 men defence and an ever reliable goalkeeper,Gianluigi Buffon stopping almost every shot that the French threw at them. Thiery Henry and Frank Ribery causing much menace to the Italians.
The game was set for extra time, the players'legs were shouting for a break but the thought of having to come this far and to lose it carried them on. It was the usual story where both teams gave their 100% trying very hard to break the deadlock, until 110min.The match will be perhaps be best remembered for Zinedine Zidane's career ending in disgrace after being dismissed for an off-the-ball incident with Marco Materazzi. He headbutted the Italian defender after a heated discussion. Cameras saw Zindane left the field in tears.
120min signals the end of extra time, the game was going into penalties. The team with the stronger will, will bring home the prize. Pirlo stepped up to take the first one and converted! Following him was Wiltord who converted as well.Materazzi scored the second penlty. After him was David Trazeguet, the men who scored the winnind goal with the French defeated the Italians in the 1998 European cup final. Luck just wasn't on his side as he missed the only penalty in the game. The Italians held their nerves and converted all remaing 3 spot kicks. When Grosso scored the winning penalty thw whole stadium erupted into cheers of joy, as the new world cup champions has been found, the mighty Italians.
